Humanoid Robot Ethics

Humanoid robots have been the dreams of sci-fi lovers since the debut of Star Wars’ C3PO, and these dreams become less fictional by the day with developments by companies such as Tesla, whose Optimus robot is tentatively scheduled for consumer purchasing in late 2027. Once it releases, Optimus will be capable of simple tasks like watering plants or folding clothes, and this range will expand to include more complex tasks later on. 


The science fiction writer Isaac Asimov created a set of ethical imperatives to govern the behavior of robots in his stories. Today, they’re called Asimov’s Rules of Robotics for having laid the groundwork in this field. They are as follows:


  1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.

  2. A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.

  3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.


Ethicists regard these laws as deontological. What that means is that actions are judged with respect to unconditional rules and duties. Because of this, one of Asimov’s robots would never be able to perform a harmful action, even if that action produces a net positive outcome. Accordingly, this deontological framework acts like guardrails for the actions of robots, something that will prove very helpful, especially in early stages when robots are more prone to misjudgement. 


In several ways, the laws resemble Kant’s three formulations of the Categorical Imperative (for humans). In his book, Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals, Kant sought to demonstrate that these principles should be accepted not only for practicality’s sake or because they empirically produce the best results in a society, but because they are grounded in pure reason. The three formulations are:


  1. “Act only according to that maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law.”

  2. “Act in such a way that you treat humanity, whether in your own person or in the person of any other, never merely as a means to an end, but always at the same time as an end.”

  3. Act according to maxims of a universally legislating member of a merely possible kingdom of ends.


All formulations share the similarity with Asimov’s laws that they apply categorically, meaning unequivocally regardless of the situation. Provided the classic Trolley Problem, a deontologist does not intervene, thus allowing greater harm to occur but preserving their ethicality by not being the active cause of harm. What an Asimovian robot would do, though, is unclear. The Trolley Problem seems to force the robot’s hand, positioning it between two categorical obligations: “do no harm” and “don’t let harm happen.” So, while pure deontology may safeguard rash actions in the early stages, it could ultimately prove to be too constrictive by preventing advanced utilitarian maneuvers when the only option is choosing the least worse outcome.


In addition to ethical decision making, the subject of personal data privacy must be considered. Given that these robots will operate in our homes 24 hours a day, it’s certain they will take in vast quantities of data in the form of conversations, videos, and more. This data will be essential for improving the robots’ function, but that cannot come at the cost of users’ privacy. The robots should accordingly allow users to customize their rules, yet not allow this customization to be done for the purpose of harm.
